First and foremost, this list is not designed for couples who are already married. Common sense suggests that these kinds of questions could cause more harm than good. So, if you are married and are just curious about what you should or could have asked, now is the perfect time not to buy this book. There is beneficial insight to be derived from asking these questions in the process of selecting or deselecting a marital candidate, but not with view of retaining or replacing a spouse. If your marriage needs some repairs, there are plenty of other authors with more suitable books available on Amazon. This is not the book for you. The purpose of my book is to reduce not increase the number of divorces.The second thing to consider before pressing the ‘Buy now with 1-Click’ button is that this list is compiled primarily for women. Although there would be some natural overlap, the kinds of questions I would suggest a man should ask his potential mate would be very different. Gentlemen, this is not that list. Someday I may compile something more appropriate for men, but for the moment, if women asked these questions before they selected a mate and got honest answers, it would be sufficient. On its most fundamental social level, the level of the family unit, the world would be a better place. I have written several other books on a variety of subjects, both fiction and nonfiction, and I understand that a long list of questions is not really a genre of literature. There is no story. A list has no plot to resolve, no setting to describe, no timeframe to work within, and no characters to develop. However, the frank conversations arising from such an assemblage of questions will most assuredly initiate and create any number of stories. WHO ARE YOU? is not a ‘self help’ or a ‘how to’ book, in which the reader is guided by an expert through specific formulas and procedures. This is a book designed to facilitate mutual help in which you and your potential partner will become experts on each other’s characters. It is a book of questions, not answers. This is the first time I have done something thing like this. I am a cultural and linguistic anthropologist by profession and I hold no degrees in psychology, couples therapy, marital or pre-marital counseling; not to mention that my earlier personal life was not without marital failures. I am, I hasten to add, now married to the love of my life, Janet, who helped edit this book. These are my credentials or rather my lack of them. Like many self-educated writers, however, my understanding of the subject is derived from retrospection, a lot of retrospection. I profoundly regret my previous naivete about marriage and acknowledge that parts of my life would have been better lived if I had asked better questions. The right questions are the key, but when to ask them is just as important. Questions about suitability should precede marital decisions, not follow them. The purpose of the following page after page of sometimes random questions is to help you initiate a deep conversation about the most important decision in your life, who to share it with. I have collected most of these questions from friends who, over the past forty years, commented that they should have asked a particular question in their quest for a mate. Some of these seemed trivial to me, but they were game-changers for them. People can be very different. The purpose of assembling all of them in one place is to facilitate the process of getting to know another soul.
